Way of Water

Parametric fabrication

  • Role:
    Concept → Prototype (Individual project)
  • When:
    Mar–Sep 2024
  • Focus:
Computational design, parametric texture generation, digital fabrication, structural testing
  • Tools:
    Blender
    Rhino
    FDM 3D printing

  • Overview:
Water, regarded as the strongest and softest substance, symbolizes life and embodies core Taoist values such as softness, selflessness, purity, and wu wei (non-action). It adapts effortlessly, demonstrating strength through flexibility.
This design is a parametrically generated footwear concept that translates Taoist principles of water into a functional, digitally fabricated system, uniting cultural storytelling with advanced manufacturing workflows.

    Problem/Goal
Running shoe midsoles/upper often rely on repetitive, mass-manufactured patterns that limit performance and individuality. My goal is to explore parametric manufacturing techniques inspired by Taoist water principles, creating a dynamic sole system that integrates cultural meaning with functional cushioning and energy response.

    Technical Highlights

    Computational Design

    • Blender geometry nodes: Generated line segments and flowing textures based on water/foot dynamics.
    • Parametric control: Adjustable angle and density to ensure printability and structural stability.
    • Form optimization: Iterated to balance Taoist-inspired “flow” aesthetics with manufacturable geometry.

    Materials & Fabrication

    • Prototyping: FDM printed structures tested for strength and pritablity.(PLA/PETG)
    • Texture optimization: Angle adjustments ensured lattice could withstand print tolerances without collapse.

    Functional Intent

    • Heel collector: Designed as an conceptual experimental energy-harvesting cavity.
    • Surface patterning: Explores water’s adaptability while enhancing grip and structural resilience.
    • Dual-purpose sole: Serves both symbolic (flow, Taoist narrative) and functional (traction, support) roles.

    Results:
Developed a parametric design workflow to generate and optimize sole textures for additive manufacturing.

Produced prototypes that visually and structurally captured water’s adaptability and strength.

Demonstrated how cultural storytelling can be integrated into computationally rigorous, manufacturable footwear systems.

    Next Steps:
Next steps include validating performance through material testing, exploring multi-material printing to mimic water flow, and scaling the parametric workflow for custom-fit footwear.
